Roman Hoffmann

Roman Hoffmann is researcher at the Vienna Institute of Demography (VID). He holds a PhD in economics from the University of Vienna and degrees in sociology and economics from the University of Munich. Before moving to the VID, he worked, among others, at the Department of Economic Sociology of the University of Vienna and the Department of Sociology of the University of Munich. In 2015 he was visiting researcher at the UP School of Economics in Manila, the Philippines. Roman has conducted empirical studies in cooperation with UNIDO, the GIZ, the City of Munich, as well as several non-governmental organizations.

In his applied research Roman focuses on issues related to development and poverty in low and middle-income countries. In particular, he is interested in understanding how health and environmental conditions affect livelihoods of vulnerable households and in the potential impact of policy interventions in achieving sustainable improvements. In his dissertation, Roman analyzed the impact and utilization of an integrated community health program that was implemented by a microfinance institution in the Philippines. Currently, he is studying differential vulnerabilities as well as coping and adaptation strategies to climate change with a particular focus on the interactions between environmental change and population movements. Besides, he is involved in projects on environmental attitudes and behavior, the integration of refugees, and the emergence of trust and reputation in exchange networks.
